Definition Aneurysms are localized arterial dilations, with structural and functional modifications of the affected arteries. For the dilation to be considered an aneurysm, the increase of the arterial diameter has to be 50% larger than normal. According to their form, which classifies them as fusiform, elongated growth, affecting uniformly the whole artery; and sacular, where the growth is more to the sides. Although any artery in the organism can be affected, the most frequent location of aneurysms is the aorta in its abdominal segment. Depending on the causes, could be congenital (present since the moment of birth) and acquired, related to arteriosclerosis or infectious and inflammatory pathologies. When they affect the aorta in its abdominal segment, they do so below the renal arteries, more frequently in men over 50 years of age. |
