Safety When there is a severe scenario, with an urgent medical issue that requires a prompt surgical intervention, there is little we can ask and decide on which doctor will operate on us and under which conditions. But in many other cases, a chronic pathology or of slow development leads to a programmed surgery, which gives us the chance to choose safely. Why would we need it? First, there is the fear of the unknown, of the physical pain, of invasion, the risk of infections, post-surgical recovery, anesthesia, etc., which is perfectly natural and understandable. But those are not the only reasons. Unfortunately, many people have had to suffer unnecessarily because of non-ethical professionals, who recommend a surgery only for economic reasons. When facing these fears, the first thing we should look for is the second medical opinion and even the third. It is our right and we should enforce it if we want to clear these types of doubts or uncertainties. Often, those consults lead to the possibility of treating that pathology through other techniques and not surgery, therefore avoiding the risk of an intervention. We must say that, generally, all medical procedures offer risks and benefits: deciding how this equation is solved in our particular case is a right we must enforce with the help of a serious professional. Many non-surgical procedures can offer the same benefit of a surgery with lower risks. New drug therapies, special diets, kinesiology, controlled exercises, etc., are often valid alternatives. In non-progressive pathologies, we must be sure that the surgery will improve a situation that, maybe, isn’t so complicated nor lowers our life quality. Can surgery truly offer us an improvement? Will its benefits be permanent or will it only temporally improve our situation, requiring future interventions? |
