The risks of overweight The growing need to look physically fit responds to an aesthetic issue, in a culture that imposes a slim figure, without any fat reserves. On the other hand, that need is stimulated by the propagation of information on the risks of excess weight and a sedentary lifestyle. Being for aesthetics, health or both, men and women of all ages are becoming more interested in not being overweight. When speaking strictly of health, excess of body fat can have serious consequences on the organism. First are the diseases of the circulatory system. The incidence of fat deposits in the system can increase the risk of cardiovascular accidents. If this system also has to circulate blood through an overweight body, the effort could be too high. In second place, obesity is a risk factor for diabetes and other metabolic diseases. Many bone-articulation disorders are originated or accentuated by the lack of physical activity and excess weight. But the lack of exercise can also promote loss of bone mass, aggravating osteoporosis. Last, the body’s self-rejection caused by excess weight can lower self-esteem and be a source of anxiety. Body dysmorphic disorder is the extreme stage of this situation, and specialists warn about its advance in society. |
