Teenage pregnancy refers to pregnancies in women 19 years old or younger, age in which it is considered that this stage of life ends. Never the less, many psychologists warn that this age range is becoming wider. Some say it has extended to 24 years on average. This means teenagers are capable of procreating long before reaching emotional maturity. Therefore, during the teenage years a pregnancy is not considered desirable.

Teenage pregnancy represents a much higher risk for the mother than for the baby. In both cases there are greater complications and a higher mortality index. But there are other reasons why teenage pregnancy is socially rejected. Those reasons stem from moral and religious issues, that’s why a lot of people consider inadequate the sexual relations of unwed couples.

Generally, when speaking of teenage pregnancy, people think of the consequences for the young mother, forgetting that the child to be born not only has a mother, but also a father. That father is not always a teenager, many times they are adult men and in many cases, a close relative of the girl.

This means the pregnancy comes from incest, sexual abuse or even rape. This further transforms the situation into something negative or unwanted.

But in other cases, the pregnancy is a result of a genuine relationship, based on love and is accepted by the couple with responsibility and joy.

The ideal pregnancy, in teenagers or not, is without a doubt the one that comes from a free and responsible decision of both parents in a frame of love.
