Embryo transfer

In the last years there has been an increase of multiples births and those considered hyper-multiple, which means more than two babies are born.  These have increased as a consequence of assisted fertilization techniques, specially of embryo transfer. In general terms, this method consists in producing embryos in a laboratory and injecting them into the maternal womb.  But for increasing the probabilities of the egg implant, various embryos are transferred, which increases the possibility of multiple pregnancies.  In any case, not all women assisted through this technique achieve a pregnancy: of every hundred, between 20 and 30 will become pregnant, but it is estimated that only some women will carry their pregnancy to term.

While without assistance one out of every one hundred pregnancies is double, one in every thousand is triple and one in every ten thousand is quadruple, embryo transfer causes an important increase in hyper-multiple pregnancies.  Women that choose this method should be properly advised, together with their partners, about the possibility of conceiving two, three or more children.  This need is not only important because of the changes that derive from raising many children simultaneously, but also because of the increased risks for mother and children.

Statistics show that in a greater amount of babies, the incidence of mortality and defects of the newborns is higher. The main cause is the low weight with which these babies are born, due to premature birth.
