Definition

Digestive hemorrhage is the loss of blood through the digestive system, from the esophagus to the anus.

It is found among the most frequent medical emergencies.  Although its global incidence is not exactly known, there are around 60 – 100 cases for every 100,000 habitants per year.

We can divide them into:
• High digestive hemorrhage, which affects the first segments of the digestive tract (esophagus, stomach and duodenum)
• Low digestive hemorrhage (small intestine, colon, rectum and anus)

The most frequent causes are peptic ulcer and varicose veins in the esophagus and stomach in high digestive hemorrhages; diverticulum and injuries to intestinal blood vessels in low digestive hemorrhages.
