Benefits Swimming is a sport that almost everyone can practice, no matter the age. Incredible cardiopulmonary resistance, low blood pressure, weight control and development of most muscle groups are some of its advantages, which are optimized by the low impact on the body. The physical development of swimming, specially when practiced from an early age, is not only an excellent base for health, but also for esthetic and emotional wellbeing. It can be practiced alone or in teams, winter or summer, outdoors or indoors and at almost any age. There are many reasons that make swimming, in every style and practice field, one of the best aerobic exercises. This is due to the fact that it is one of the most complete exercises, taking into consideration the amount of muscle groups that are activated during its practice. When swimming with style more than two thirds of our body’s muscles are used. In most of the accepted styles, the movements imply the use of lower, upper, thorax and head muscles. All of these carry a specific function for stability and propulsion in water.
As we said, it has a low impact on our body. This is due to the body being sustained by water, which reduces to a maximum the tension on bones and joints. This makes it better than any other competitive sport. Running, an essential part of many sports, causes a strong impact on joints, specially knees and ankles. Compared to running, swimming not only doesn’t have this undesirable consequence but, on the contrary, fortifies joint tissues and thus prevents problems. That is why swimming improves body posture and develops flexibility better than most other sports. |
