Does drug addiction have a psychological predisposition? Is it possible to know if somebody will use drugs during their life by studying their personality traits? We will first define what we understand by addiction or dependence. When we refer to addictions, we are grouping at least three models related to drugs, legal or illegal. Even though each person is unique, and as such, produces unique facts, we will define these three basic forms, on which each individual will present special characteristics. The first of these three is use or consume. This includes every person that has an occasional contact with psychotropic substances, without this becoming a real impediment for their personal life and relationships.

Addiction is the second step of this steep hill, including the people that have transformed use into abuse. This generates problems in their relationships, for their need to acquire this substances as well as for their state during and after its effects. What is the difference with the third attitude, dependency? In this state, the user needs the drug continuously and its suspension generates an abstinence syndrome. This means their body has learned to function under the effects of the drugs and without them is unable to function, at least partially and temporarily. Although drug use has existed since ancient times in different races and cultures, it is now when drug dependency is perceived as a crucial problem. Its consequences not only fall on those who use drugs, which are without a doubt the most affected, but also on the social group through which different problems such as family conflicts, violence, the cost to health services or lack of productivity have an effect on.

We view the general consume phenomenon, not specifically drugs. The human of our era consumes, therefore exists. The appetite for objects, understood as the opposite of subjects, seems unstoppable. Even towards those that are not essential for subsisting in the biological, social or spiritual level, but transform into essential by attracting the energy of a great mass of men and women among which the young are, probably, the most vulnerable.
