Stay active Old age is often understood as equal to loss and decline, specially in eastern and developed societies, where youth, physical force and competition are considered fundamental keys to success and happiness. But old age is a stage of natural changes that can be carried out with a lot of quality if we know how to handle certain aspects of physical, psychological and social health. Among the functions that are supposedly most threatened by the passing of time is memory. But, is it true that all people loose their ability to remember when they age? According to recent research supported by the National Institute of Aging (NIA), which is part of the National Health Institutes of USA, this concept is wrong. Researchers at the Institute reveal that the loss of memory does not have to worsen with age. New studies of the organism guarantee that keeping our memory active is the best defense for preventing this precious human function. At the same time, maintaining an active mind is key for maintaining good general brain functions. Authorities at the Neurobiology Aging Program of NIA state that those who do not use their memory, eventually loose it. It is necessary to change the old myth that when we age we become senile. Learning that dementia and memory loss commonly associated with age are not, in fact, part of the normal aging process. |
