Genes and phobias The doors close, metallic, solid and airtight. It is only six floors, but the agitation, suffocation and breathing accelerates and there is a lack of air. When slowly, the elevator reaches the third floor, the cold sweat on the hands, the confinement, the certainty of been trapped and the feeling of a terrifying paralysis, make staying inside unbearable. Nothing else matters and prey of an uncontrollable terror, as soon as the doors open, you dart to leave the box, searching for the open space, these are certain claustrophobia symptoms. More than 10% of the population suffers or has suffered a phobia episode. Agoraphobia – fear of open spaces-, panic attacks or the common claustrophobia are, among others, the disorders formally known as anxiety disorders usually called phobias. The practical and social inconveniences of these experiences produced in many people on all social levels are also economically important for the work and performance of the affected. Recently a group of researchers from the Center of Medical and Molecular Genetics in Barcelona, Spain, found that: the duplication of a segment in chromosome 15 of humans could be responsible for the susceptibility of some people to suffer from these panic attacks, agoraphobia and some related psychological disorders.
