Generalities The c-section consists of a surgery for extracting the fetus through the abdomen, with an incision. It is used when there are no possibilities for the baby to be born by natural delivery, or when labor could risk the health of the mother, the child, or both. It is believed that c-sections are safer for babies than normal delivery, but research has showed that the mortality of newborns is similar either way. C-section, since it is a surgical intervention, has the common risks of all surgeries, and has a post-operation period with a healing process. On the contrary, normal delivery allows the mother to return to her home with her baby and return to her normal activities in a much briefer period of time. Therefore, when possible, normal delivery should be preferred for childbirth. |
