Man vs. machine Robotic surgery is the application of robots to different surgical techniques, including the possibility of commanding the instruments at a distance. According to the experts dedicated to these techniques, this is the future of medicine. Also called “cyber-surgery” it proposes great fields of action, some of which have already been successfully tried. The greatest advances in these techniques have been done in the United States and some Eastern European countries. This is not science fiction, and the robots currently seen in operating rooms do not resemble surgeons. Far from having human forms, they are a great variety of prototypes with the most diverse forms and sizes, according to the tasks for which they have been designed. They are capable of carrying out diverse functions according to the programming they receive. The goal of robotic surgery is not replacing the surgeon, who is still essential in the operating room. What robotic development offers is a wonderful expansion of the surgeon’s abilities. They can register and perpetuate the surgeon’s skills at the peak of his or her career and at the most of his experience. Finger sensibility can be registered and amplified, with systems that empower that perception, for example, when making a cut. An augmentative surgery system can transform a small surgical field, where the cuts wouldn’t measure more than a few millimeters, into a much wider virtual surface. This allows, after the necessary training, to make cuts smaller than a millimeter. Surgeons with lower hand skills reach performances similar to those of their more renowned peers, maximizing their precision skills. Systems can also correct certain inabilities as shakes, lack of strength for manipulating instruments, etc., most of which are caused by aging. This can lengthen the professional peak and take advantage of the experience acquired over the years. But we always refer to machines being used by professionals, they are not yet capable of being a replacement. |
