Guaranteed contraception

For some time now, women have been demanding equal responsibilities in the task of preventing unwanted pregnancies. Some of them have problems with the intake of oral contraceptives or mechanical devices such as IUD, and a method that also involves men is suggested. Many of these couples that desire to solve the contraception problem with a definite and safe option, choose vasectomy.

Vasectomy is the surgical interruption of the deferent duct, which connects the testicle-epididymis unit (1) with the urethra, interrupting the flow of spermatozoids towards ejaculation. In this way, the couple will keep sexual relations in a natural way, without a risk of pregnancy.

There are some doubts surrounding this method that must be cleared:
• It does not affect the possibility of orgasm or ejaculation, since spermatozoids are only a part of the semen (2)
• It does not impede the testicles’ function, which maintains its production of male hormones, which intervene in diverse organic processes.
• But, it does not prevent sexually transmitted diseases: it is only a contraceptive method. Although vasectomy is a safer contraception method than condoms, the advantages of condoms are the protection against diseases and the lack of permanent contraceptive consequences.

The female equivalent of this intervention is the tubal ligation of the fallopian tubes. It is said to be a semi-permanent method because it has long-term contraception consequences but in many cases it is possible to revert.
