The origin of violence Many reports state that one out of every three women have been, at some point in their life, a victim of sexual, physical or psychological violence from men. In this article, we will speak of the topic from the research of the program GenSalud. (*) Thousands of programs have been developed for helping these women, from accommodations and legal assistance to support groups and advice services. Both activists and academics have equally understood that, although essential, these services are not enough. For eradicating gender violence (GV) we should analyze the cause as well as the effect. The cause is the violent behavior of men. It is easy to blame men without questioning the reason of their violence. In the United States, 90% of those responsible of aggravated assault are men. Where does this tendency for violence come from? The growing attention to the problem of men and violence has centered around the environment in which these men grow up. The ideas, images and behaviors which these men are exposed to since birth play a central role in designing their behavior. In fact, men that see abuse during their childhood have a greater probability of abusing their future partners. The programs that examine the role of men in GV can be classified into approximately three categories: education campaigns (including its publication in media); work with the authors of GV and programs that deal with masculinity. |
