Elderly in trouble (*)

Eating and its primary goal, good nutrition, are essential for achieving and maintaining good health throughout life.  However, there are critical stages such as growth, pregnancy, some pathologies and old age.

Some elderly have problems eating properly.  Specialists at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of USA analyze the inconveniences that make eating a challenge for the elderly and offer treatment suggestions.  One of the ways of eating well is carefully reading food labels.  When we don’t know the nutritional information we could incorrectly use products, which is an important obstacle to proper nutrition.  But there are others, for example, chewing problems.

If you have problems chewing it is not possible to eat certain foods such as meat, fresh fruits and vegetables, except if you soften them first.

Instead of those products, try others like:
• Dairy: foods cooked in milk, like cream soups, pudding, yoghurt and cheese;
• Chopped meat and eggs have a great nutritional value;
• Vegetables: cabbage and broccoli, beans, peas, carrots and potatoes, vegetable juice and chopped vegetables, cooked as puree:
• Fresh fruits: fruit juice and soft fruits;
• Canned foods: since they are precooked, they are softer;
• Bread: cooked cereals, rice, bread pudding and soft cookies.
