Toxic The effects of exposure to any toxic substance depend on the doses, duration, the way of exposure, personal habits and characteristics and the presence of other chemical substances. With the help of specialists from ATSDR (*) this article will try to answer the most frequent questions about the effects of automobile gasoline on health. Gasoline is used as fuel for automobile motors, also known as nafta in some Spanish speaking countries. Is a manufactured mix, a petroleum derivate from the refinery process, which gives as a result a liquid that can be colorless, pale, blue or pink and is very flammable. Typically, this fuel contains more than 150 chemical products, including small amounts of benzene, toluene, xylem and sometimes lead. The exposure to this toxic agent occurs with more probability when breathing the vapors of gas stations while the automobile’s tank is filled. In high doses, gasoline is an irritant of the lungs when inhaled and of the stomach when ingested. The exposure to high levels can also cause harmful effects to the nervous system. |
