Vigorous Response

If you are worried about the high level of stress implied in the daily life of our post-modern societies and for improving you planned to start relaxing, maybe this article will worry you again…

The strong response model for combating stress, proposed by Richard Diensthier, psychologist of Nebraska University (USA), questions the common use of moderate techniques such as relaxation, hypnosis and meditation. He argues that if individuals aren’t capable of periodically dealing with adversity, they will weaken their ability to handle themselves and effectively compete, and will not develop the personal feeling of being able to dominate the situations they must face. Without that basic attitude, their response systems will weaken, further than what is considered healthy.

Diensthier proposes that for being in good mental conditions it is necessary to be strong and not weak. The physical and mental strength, and the ability to face a challenge, can ease the harmful effects of stress, much more efficiently than relaxation.

Both response systems when facing the human difficulties, the same as with many animals, are started in the hypothalamus and stimulate, through different routes, the secretion of adrenaline and cortisone: two hormones produced by suprarenal glands.
