The whole and the parts Human’s life expectancy has been slowly increasing throughout history. But it was during the past century and the start of this millennia when the average probabilities of living beyond 75 years of age have become a reality. The knowledge on the causes of disease, vaccines, antibiotics, the evolution of diagnosis techniques, the advances of surgery, the development of pharmaceuticals, diets….Many factors have had influence on the fact that we can have a much greater life expectancy than our ancestors. But, paradoxically, the further a person lives, the greater the possibility of their organism to develop illnesses originated by degenerative cell phenomenon. Many of those dedicated to researching and developing knowledge with the hope of perpetuating life and health have centered their studies in this field: the cellular. To completely stop deterioration can be achieved, supposedly, by stopping the aging of its parts, specially the smallest. The greatest signs of aging that generally upset us when we see them in the mirror, have their microscopic base on cellular aging. We will now see how cell expiration and death happens, and if scientists can do something to stop this fatal process. |
