Abandoned by medicine

Many substances exist that were first used by science for health, and later became abused by some drug-dependants. Phencyclidine (PCP) later called angel dust, was first manufactured during the 50’s as an intravenous anesthetic. But its use on human beings was discontinued in 1965 because it was discovered that quite often patients became agitated, delirious or irrational while recovering from its anesthetic effects.

Currently, PCP is manufactured in illegal laboratories and sold underground to users that know it with various names that reflect its strange and volatile effects: angel dust, ozone, wack and rocket fuel. Killer joints and crystal supergrass are street names for identifying the combination of PCP and marijuana.

PCP is a crystalline white powder that is easily dissolved in water or alcohol. It has a distinctive bitter chemical taste. It can be easily mixed with colorants and is sold in the illegal drug market in the form of pills, caplets and colored powders. Generally, there are three use forms: inhaled, smoked or ingested. For smoking, it is usual to add plant leaves like mint, parsley, oregano or marijuana.
