What it is The Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome (HUS) is an illness characterized by a destruction of red blood cells, decrease in blood platelets (one of the main coagulation cells) and an alteration in kidney function. These are the main characteristics although it is an illness that affects the entire body. It specially affects children under 2 years old and mainly during the hot seasons, although it can also appear during the entire year. In Argentina, the rate is 250 cases per year, approximately. In Argentina, for example, it is the main cause of acute kidney failure that affects newborns and children. There are typical and atypical forms; the most frequent in Latin America –and fortunately the most benign of the two- is the typical, preceded by a diarrhea, frequently with blood. In the typical HUS the child is infected (via digestion) mainly with a bacteria called Escherichia Coli Enterohaemorrhagic, which produces a toxin (Verotoxin) which when freed it starts a series of reactions in the organism that alter the small blood vessels, specially the kidneys, but also other organs, for example the brain (which can cause convulsions), intestine (perforation or invagination), etc. Collaborated in this article: Dra.
