A lifeguard for USA This year, more than 1.4 million people in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer and more than 500,000 will die of cancer. It is estimated that 32% of these deaths could be related to eating habits. Eating fruits and vegetables is an important part of a healthy diet, which contributes to reducing the risk of cancer. The health benefits of fruits and vegetables go beyond cancer prevention. During the last decades, researches about the relation between the eating patterns and health have proven that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is associated to the prevention of heart disease, another leading cause of death in USA and also in many countries in America. Experts in the field of health have promoted the daily intake of 5 to 9 portions of fruits and vegetables among North Americans. This recommendations not only comes from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), which includes Centers for Disease Control (CDC), but also from the Department of Agriculture (USDA). They all share the opinion t hat eating more fruits and vegetables, as part of a diet low in fat and rich in fiber, can reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic illnesses.
