An obligated visit It has been insisted that every woman should periodically visit her gynecologist for carrying out a female check-up that can prevent, among other things, cervical cancer. According to the CELSAM (Latin American Women’s Health Center) survey, 40% of women do not have their yearly gynecological check-up, and among them, half only saw their doctor when they gave birth and some never. (*) The Papanicolaou is considered a basic health care strategy for preventing cervical cancer and diagnose lesions that can cause tumors. In Argentina, for example, 5,000 new cases of this cancer type are diagnosed each year. But because of fear, ignorance or lack of access to medical care, many women neglect this important health issue. Even in the presence of a precise illness, many women prefer to learn from magazines or the Internet the possible causes of their discomfort and self-medicate. This is usually a waste of time and money, since they spend on the wrong treatment for their medical condition.
