Different alternatives The current alternatives for family planning and contraception are many and very varied. Some propose barrier methods, such as male and female condoms; others are based on the action of sexual hormones, etc. So far we are talking about devices that can be used in a particular sexual relation or in a special period of life, for then being able to stop using them and still have the possibility of conceiving babies. But there are also the so called “permanent methods” such as tube ligature for women and vasectomy for men. ¿When are these procedures recommended and when are they unethical? For responding to these questions, we used material published by CELSAM, Latin American organization dedicated to women’s health. For its specialists, education and information that is scientifically correct plays a key role for knowing the similarities and true differences between the temporary contraception methods and the permanent, such as ligature and vasectomy. CELSAM supports the parliamentary initiatives in favor of making tube ligature and vasectomy part of the public service offered for family planning. However, the need for a proper space for contraception advice is highlighted, through which couples can learn about other reversible methods, non-definitive, of similar efficiency when they are correctly and consciously used. |
