Health authorities from the European union are attempting to achieve the commitment of “fast food” restaurants so they stop advertising, with the goal of protecting children’s nutritional health. In fact, in the EU there are more than 21 million children with obesity problems, and fast food is among the reasons for such disorder.
The European health minister, Markos Kyprianou, expressed that the goal is achieving a “voluntary commitment”. If this will is not effective, the European Union “will have no other choice but to adopt a restrictive legislation”, declared in an interview published in ‘News Diary’.
The experience of parents trying to teach their children to choose healthy foods is that in many cases, they are overcome by the force of the ads that children absorb through TV and Internet.
The politics of the European Union would go in the near future through a combination of strategies, which will also include “a new formulation of products, for having delicious choices that will also be healthy”. It is expected that the presidency of Portugal in the European Union, which starts next July 1, approves a new legislation for the labeling of products, which will allow more legible and easier to read labels. It is also being discussed the possibility for making it obligatory to include nutritional information, calorie, sugar and fat amounts.
