IT HAS BEEN REQUESTED TO CREATE THE SPECIALTY OF CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRY

Child psychiatrists and parents of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), united in various civil associations of Spain, request the creation of the specialty of child and adolescent Psychiatry.  They have officially done so through a presentation to the authorities of the Health Ministry of that country, but they are also carrying out a social campaign for adding wills.  Spain, Rumania, Lithuania and Malta are the last countries of the EU where there are no specialists in child psychiatry.  The rest of the Union’s countries have established the specialty of child and adolescent psychiatry, as a completely autonomous specialty and with the mentioned titled, exclusively dedicated to children, adolescents and young.

One of the most serious problems of the parents with children affected by the attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, is the lack of diagnosis and treatment by true specialized professionals, which means, child and adolescent psychiatrists.  They are currently treated in most of the Usmis (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Units) by psychiatrists of adults, with the resulting prejudice for the minors, since this as well as all childhood disorders, requires studies, specialization and experience in the children’s field, which a psychiatrist for adults doesn’t have.

In December 2006, the rough draft was approved for Strategies on Mental Health in the National Health System of Spain.  But it is yet to be contemplated in this document the lack of this sub-specialty.  This is why from different platforms and associations there has been pressure so that health authorities take the necessary steps for installing the sub-specialty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, crucial in any national health system.
